Small but Mighty

Hummingbird migration is upon us, so get out your bird feeders and sugar water!

Hummingbirds, though tiny in size, are some of the most unique birds alive today. Here are some facts that may surprise you about the itty bitty feathered chicks.

  1. One thing that is surprising about hummingbirds is that they migrate. In fact, they can travel up to 2,000 miles every year, twice a year!

  2. They can fly forward, backward, and even upside down!

  3. Hummingbirds are relatively unsocial creatures. They definitely don't have facebook or instagram.

  4. They can fly up to speeds of 45 mph, I'd say that is fast for a bird that only weighs as much as a nickel.

  5. And although they spend most of their time with their nose in a flower, they can't actually smell them, because they have no sense of smell.

Do you know why Hummingbird feeders are red?

It's because red flowers are often rich sources of food for hummingbirds. The color red often signals high-octane fuel for their intensely active way of life.

Now that we know more about Hummingbirds, we can appreciate this video of a young bird hard at work..
